Step 1: Open your file the right way
For Google Sheets: After downloading, go to Google Drive, click New → File upload, and upload the file. Then open it and choose File → Save as Google Sheets to create an editable copy. Work in that copy. For Microsoft Excel: Just double-click the downloaded file to open it. If it opens in “Protected View,” click Enable Editing at the top so the formulas work.
Step 2: Make your own copy first
Before you change anything, save a clean copy of the original. That way, if you ever want a fresh start – for a new year or a new goal – you have the untouched template to come back to. In Google Sheets, use File → Make a copy. In Excel, use File → Save As and give it a new name.
Step 3: Only type in the highlighted cells
Our trackers do the math for you. You only ever enter your own numbers in the input cells – usually the ones that are shaded or labeled. The totals, summaries, and dashboards update automatically. If a cell contains a formula, you can leave it alone; it’s already working.
Step 4: Start with the sample data
Most trackers come pre-filled with sample numbers so you can see how everything connects. Play with it first – change a number and watch the dashboard react. When you’re ready, clear the sample data and replace it with your own.
Step 5: Build the habit
A tracker only works if you use it. Pick a regular time – a weekly ten-minute check-in works well – to update your numbers. The tools are designed for quick, frequent updates, not long monthly marathons.
Stuck on something?
Check the instructions tab inside your tracker first – it has specifics for that tool. Still stuck? Email ops@creativefinanceshop.com and we’ll walk you through it.
